Fasting Is Tasting: Better Than the Richest Feast

Fasting is Tasting: Better Than the Richest Feast

“Taste and see that the Lord is good.”
Psalm 34:8

Fasting is tasting. It’s treasuring the words of His mouth more than our necessary food. (Job 23:12) We live not on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God. (Deut 8:3, Mt. 4:4) As we feed our spirit with what God has said to us through scripture, as we meditate on His words and are sustained by them, they become our joy and heart’s delight! (Jeremiah 15:16)

Fasting is being hungry for God — so hungry that we’ll dispense with everything else in order to search Him out.

“O God, you are my God;
I earnestly search for you.
My soul thirsts for you;
my whole body longs for you
in this parched and weary land
where there is no water.”
Psalm 63:1, NLT

God promises that when we seek Him with our whole heart, He will be found. We have sought Him with our whole heart these days of Pursuit 21. As a result, He has met with us in prayer. We’ve seen Him in the place of worship. We’ve been awed by His power and glory:

“I have seen you in your sanctuary
and gazed upon your power and glory.
Your unfailing love is better than life itself;
how I praise you!”
Psalm 63:2-3, NLT

We’ve tasted Him and discovered that He’s far better than the richest, most satisfying feast!

“I will praise you as long as I live, lifting up my hands to you in prayer.
You satisfy me more than the richest feast.
I will praise you with songs of joy.”
Psalm 63:4-6, NLT

This is what fasting is all about — seeking and requiring God’s presence, shutting out other voices and appetites so that we might hear Him and be fed and sustained by His Word. As a result, we’re completely satisfied … to the point of praise!

We’ve stopped stuffing ourselves with the small things of this world so that there is room for the truly great!

“You’re blessed when you’ve worked up a good appetite for God.
He’s food and drink in the best meal you’ll ever eat.”
Matthew 5:6, MSG

Let’s sit down at his dining table now. Let’s open His word, enter His courts with praise, listen to Him speak … and be satisfied with His rich feast!

These two songs are great appetizers to get you started. They’ll take you into His courts with the password of praise.

Questions:

  • Have you discovered on your fast that Jesus’ presence is more satisfying and filling than the richest feast?
  • How would you compare tasting the small things of this world to tasting Him?
  • Has it felt like He’s food and drink in the best meal you’ll ever eat? How so?
